 fic discovery relies heavily on foundational open-source libraries like Nu
 mPy and SciPy. While these tools underpin global research\, they face a pe
 rsistent "foundation tax". Simultaneously\, the rapid expansion of AI infr
 astructure has created a fragmented computing landscape\, where specialize
 d hardware optimizations often require abandoning classic scientific Pytho
 n workflows.\nA new dynamic is emerging through ongoing ecosystem-wide col
 laboration\, notably around the evolving Array API Standard. Rather than d
 eep learning frameworks simply building on top of foundational Python\, co
 re scientific software is beginning to leverage the immense hardware inves
 tments poured into AI compute backends. By decoupling high-level scientifi
 c syntax from low-level execution\, the ecosystem is moving toward a futur
 e where domain logic can run seamlessly across CPUs\, GPUs\, and other acc
 elerators without rewriting the core codebase.\nThis seminar will explore 
 this technical and cultural evolution. We will feature a performance demon
 stration comparing traditional native compiled workflows with modern Pytho
 n code employing SciPy and JAX\, showing how pure Python can match native 
 speed on the CPU and scale across hardware. Alongside these performance me
 trics and the underlying infrastructure that enables them\, we will examin
 e the changing human dynamics of open source\, including the current strai
 n placed on maintainers by the influx of AI-generated code\, and look ahea
 d at sustainable organizational models for the digital commons.\nSpeaker's
